Many moving companies can give moving quotes over the phone, however, you will receive the most accurate quote with an in-home estimate. For homes that are over 1,500 square feet, or if you have a number of large items, it is always best to get an in-home estimate.

Be sure to have any essential items that you will need, including toiletries, important papers, spare clothing, etc. Pack a suitcase with these as if you are going away for a few days vacation.

Packing Tips

  • Choose boxes that are appropriate in size.
  • Cushion the bottom of your box with packing paper or bubble wrap.
  • Wrap delicate items carefully with packing paper or bubble wrap. Be sure to cushion the top with additional packing paper or bubble wrap so that items won’t shift and break.
  • Pack the boxes tightly, but be sure not to make them too heavy so that they are hard to lift.
  • Secure your box with packing tape.
  • Label each box with the contents and the room it belongs in

The sizes of boxes you’ll need is entirely dependent on the items you pack. There are a number of specialty boxes available for specific items, such as wardrobe boxes and picture boxes. Keep in mind that packing large boxes with many heavy items can make them difficult to lift.

A rule of thumb for determining the number of boxes depends on the square footage of your home. The general guidelines are as follows:

  • Less than 500 sq ft: 3-12 large boxes, 8-15 medium boxes, 12-18 small boxes
  • 500-999 sq ft: 5-15 large boxes, 10- 20 medium boxes, 15-25 small boxes
  • 1,000-1,499 sq ft: 10-20 large boxes, 15-25 medium boxes, 20-30 small boxes
  • 1,500-1,999 sq ft: 15-25 large boxes, 20-30 medium boxes, 30-40 small boxes
  • Over 2,000 sq ft: 20-30 large boxes, 25-35 medium boxes, 40-50 small boxes
  • Try to pack room by room, starting with the room that is used the least.
  • Start with the items that are used the least in each room. Label the boxes when finished. Save essential items for last.
  • If packing seems to be overwhelming, contact your moving company to see if they offer packing services.
