Moving from an Apartment to a House

Purchasing your first home is a major moment in your life, full of excitement and new beginnings. You’ll have the chance to create a space that is all your own when you go from renting to owning. This process does, however, come with new responsibilities.

To help ease your transition from an apartment to a house, we’ve put together our top tips:

Make a Pre-Move Project List

Your new home may need a  little work prior to moving in. Certain projects should be completed before you move in all your items, such as painting new carpeting or floor refinishing. By making a list of pre-move projects, you can properly budget for them, complete them, and then move in worry-free!

It is also important to keep records of any improvements you make to your home over the years. When or if you decide to sell your home, these records will help you provide documentation for potential buyers of how you added value to the home.

Explore Your New Home

Be sure to check out your new home and get to know everything you can about the electrical and HVAC systems. Make sure to label your breakers in the electrical box if that hasn’t been done already. This will be helpful when you blow a fuse.

You should also learn where the main water valve is and how to shut it off to prevent water damage if an appliance malfunctions or another disaster occurs. Also, get an idea for a moving floor plan, that way when you are ready to move you have a good idea of what goes where.

Change Out All The Locks

This should be one of the first things you do when moving into a new house. For your safety and security, you need to change out the locks with new ones. This is because the previous owner may have shared keys with friends, family, and neighbors whom you don’t want to permit access.

It is also a good time to have spare keys made for the new locks, so you have them in case you lose a key or need to lend one out to a family member or friend.

Introduce Yourself to the Neighbors

When the hustle and bustle of moving slows down, take a stroll to your neighbors’ homes and introduce yourself. When meeting your neighbors, be sure to exchange contact information so you can assist each other when you go out of town or in other instances when they or you may need help.

Make a Rainy Day Fund

Anything can happen when owning a home. The washer can break down, or the refrigerator could go on the fritz. Don’t be caught off guard by these surprises by saving up for a rainy day! A rainy day fund is where you can build up funds to use for surprise home expenses.

Find Professionals in Your Area

From plumbing to HVAC maintenance, your home will eventually require the expertise of local professionals. Get recommendations from family, friends, and neighbors, and keep that information handy so it’s ready when you need it.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

To keep your home’s systems running smoothly, preventative maintenance is key. Once you’re settled in, use your list of professionals to schedule your annual inspections of household items like your furnace or HVAC system.
