How to Prepare Your Furniture for a Move

When preparing for your move, there are several things to check off your list. One of these things is preparing your furniture. There are a few ways you can prepare your furniture to make it easier to manage during the move and help prevent it from becoming damaged in the moving process.

Tips for Preparing Your Furniture for a Move

Gather the Right Packing Supplies

Before you get started with preparing your furniture, make sure you have the proper furniture packing supplies to get started, including:

  • Bubble wrap
  • Moving blankets
  • Furniture pads
  • Covers for your sofa and mattress
  • Plastic stretch wrap
  • Corrugated cardboard

Many of these supplies are available at your local hardware store or online at places such as Amazon.

Clean Your Furniture

Before you begin packing up your furniture, we recommend that you give your furniture a thorough clean and dusting. If you leave dust and debris on your furniture, it can cause scratches during the move. Be sure to clean underneath the furniture and go through the cushions and drawers for any left behind items.

By cleaning your furniture ahead of time, you won’t be bringing any dust or debris into your new home, and you can enjoy your clean furniture after a hard day of moving in.

Pack Your Furniture

While taking your furniture apart, you will want to make sure to secure the hardware, screws, and other small parts in sealable plastic bags such as freezer bags or sandwich bags. This will help to prevent you from losing crucial pieces of your furniture.

Label the bags and then use tape to further secure them, so nothing is lost during the move. You can also use towels, blankets, sheets, and newspapers to wrap your fragile items that are being packed. This can help you get the most out of your boxes and will result in fewer boxes you have to carry.

Wrap Your Furniture

To prevent damage to your furniture, you want to make sure you take the time to wrap everything properly. We recommend using bubble wrap for fragile pieces such as lamps and glass tabletops. For your couch or mattress, you can use plastic stretch wrap to prevent stains.
For wood furniture, avoid using bubble wrap or plastic since they can damage the finish on your furniture. We recommend using a soft item such as a moving blanket in between furniture pieces and the plastic wrap so it doesn’t touch wood.

Hire a Professional Mover

Professional movers have the skills and the tools to properly and safely move your furniture to prevent damage. Moving furniture can be a difficult and dangerous task that is best left to the professionals to prevent injuries and damage to your items.
