Cleaning Out Clutter for Moving Day

Moving into a new home is a huge undertaking. You must pack, pack, and pack some more! But before you start tossing things into random boxes, it’s essential you get rid of your non-essential items. As you have settled into your current home, you accumulated and stashed more things than may have realized. Now, however, you are forced to recon with your stashing ways!

Take this time to go through anything and everything, and part ways with the things that are of no longer use to you. The professional movers of Gardner Moving have some simple solutions to make what seems like a daunting task – a little less daunting.

Focus on one room at a time.

Once you’ve signed on the dotted line, its time to pack up your things. Packing up all the rooms at once can be overwhelming. Instead of thinking of the overall job at hand, focus on packing one room at a time. This will allow you concentrate on one space and its entire contents versus the contents of your entire house.

Timing is everything.

We at Gardner Moving will give it to you straight – moving takes time. And unless you are under a serious time constraint – like an immediate job relocation – set aside ample time to go through everything. The last thing you want to do is be rushed during the packing process. We suggest packing 3-4 boxes a day to keep things moving on pace.

To keep or not to keep?

That really is the question. But, consider the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. As you begin to sort through your things, make a few piles of what you want to keep and items you could donate. While these decisions can be tough, ask yourself the last time you used some of these things. Think of the impact you can make by donating your unused items. If you think it is too cumbersome to make several trips to a donating facility, there are organizations that will do free pick-up at your home.

Remember your donations can be filed as a charitable deduction when you file your taxes with the IRS, so keep your receipt.

Deciding what to toss.

This all comes down to personal preference, but once you decide on what you are going to keep versus donate, give the rest a swift kick to the curb! You will probably be shocked to find how much stuff you are willing to part with.

When to toss financial documents. This is always a tough one. While it is smart to keep a file cabinet of important items, you do not have to keep everything. While we cannot suggest what you could toss, here are few items you should keep.

  • Birth certificates
  • Deeds
  • Social security cards
  • Wills
  • Adoption papers
  • Records of Mortgages or loans you have paid off

Any active bank account, insurance documents, property records, contracts, stock certificates or warranties.

There are online checklists available to help you sort through personal, medical and financial documents. Just be sure to research the time-frames you should keep these items, before tossing them.

Lastly, when you decide to throw them away, it is always best to shred personal information.

Mark your boxes.

While tempting to move quickly, take the time to clearly mark the contents of each box. Make piles of the “like” boxed items and ask your professional moves to load their trucks in this same fashion. This will make unloading easier on you. Which brings us to our last tip…
