How to Prepare for Your Professional Movers
Moving from one home to another can be a complicated, frustrating process. Many homeowners decide that they would like to make a move easier by hiring a moving company.
Before your Pittsburgh movers arrive at your door, however, there are plenty of things that you need to do first in order to make sure that the professional movers can come in and get the job done quickly.
- Pack Properly. Be sure that you have everything that you need to pack boxes, including packing paper, bubble wrap, and packing tape. If you have delicate items, wrap them in bubble wrap or packing paper, cushion the bottom of the box with more bubble wrap or paper, place the items in the box, and then add even more bubble wrap on the top. Delicate items should be in small or medium-sized boxes and should be well marked. While you are packing each box, stop and see how heavy it is. Be sure to use packing tape to close the box completely. On every box, there should be a list of items included, plus the room the box will be placed in at the new home.
- Ask About Large Items. If you have large appliances that you are taking with you, such as dishwashers, refrigerators, ovens, and washers or dryers, they may need to be prepared in a certain way before the movers arrive at your house. Also, if you have a piano, you should make sure that you hire a mover with piano-moving experience.
- Take Care of Your Pets. Dogs and cats often become upset or skittish during a move. We have seen many pets run outside, with their owners, trying to catch them and bring them back home. Be sure that your pet is placed in a room that no one will enter, or crate them. Better yet, bring them to a friend’s house until the boxes are on the moving truck.
- Double-check Your Home. It’s very easy to leave items behind. In your kitchen, look at the top of your refrigerator, check all of your cabinets, and be sure that there are no stray utensils lying around. In your bathroom, check any drawers in your vanity and look in your shower stall and bath. Check every bedroom closet, and don’t forget to look at the walls and shelves.
